A couple of weeks ago, I completed another ‘iceberg’ Web site, in which most of the site is restricted. As part of the process, I learned how to create a complete WordPress theme (about time I got round to properly theming this blog…) and a Wiki. I chose WordPress for the blog because it has all the features my clients were looking for, and is kept up-to-date by a dedicated community. For the Wiki I tried no fewer than 3 other versions before I settled on DokuWiki.

Unfortunately, I can’t show you either—unless you are an AFPO Calpe member, in which case you can head over to the site and log in! I suppose that means a few more people will see those pages than see my lovely designs for the Jalón Villa Rentals management interface, which only the owner and I ever see. (Actually, I could add the index page to my page designs—so you can see if it’s as lovely as I claim. I’ll put that on my to-do list.)

What anyone can see are the public pages. They are quite text-heavy, so I compensated by setting text in plenty of whitespace—actually buff—and creating what I hope is an imposing header.

This header is in part based on the AFPO magazine cover: it was from there that I got the blue and the yellow, and the overlapping titles. At the end is an image of the Peñon, with a cloud halo. I love the photo, which featured on the previous AFPO site, and still appears on their stationery. I’m not so sure about the heavy gilt lettering—but the President told me he didn’t have a copy of the photo without the lettering, and I’ve now got quite used to it.

Because of the big header, I gave the Web site a left-column menu.

I explain the background to this commission, and the thinking behind particular design decisions, in my notes on my website portfolio page. And you can of course visit the AFPO Web site itself!

It took much, much longer than I thought it would, but I had to do it to maintain some sort of credibility in 2009, since it was so out of date. The old section could have been embarrassing my existing clients—and would certainly have put off future clients.

I haven’t by any means stopped mourning Paul. I think of him every day, and often dream of him at night. But I can’t go on ignoring people who find my stuff useful.

My plan now is to start a new series—of ‘Web rules.’ I can think of about 40 or 50 offhand. I’ll explain all in my next post, which will also include Rule 1.

In my last post, I let slip the word extrovert. I probably shouldn’t have used the word, since it’s so widely misused, and misunderstood. Lots of people use it as yet another synonym of ‘outgoing‘, or ‘gregarious’ or ‘sociable’—just as they use introvert as though it meant ‘shy’ or ‘unsociable’ or ‘inward-looking’.

Actually, the world is full of outgoing, gregarious, sociable introverts, and extroverts who prefer their own company (like me). The two words are technical terms, made up by the Swiss psychologist Jung about eighty years ago. He didn’t make them up to refer to something obvious like sociability, but to define a fundamental difference between the ways human beings operate.

He thought that just as people are right-handed or left-handed, people are extrovert or introvert.

The analogy can help to clear up some misunderstandings. Right-handed people don’t use their right hand for everything, all the time. Ditto, left-handed people. (And there are some people called ‘ambidextrous’—though they tend to use just the one hand for signing credit card slips.) We use another hand if it’s better to use it at the time. In the same way, extroverts can often act like introverts, and introverts react like extroverts.

The important point, however, is that just as the fact that you can use your left hand often and well doesn’t stop you being right-handed, being able sometimes to act like an introvert doesn’t stop you being an extrovert. Or vice versa.

So what are the fundamental differences?

You may have noticed that I have already slipped in a crucial difference. Extroverts react; introverts act. (We both do both, of course: just check that you’ve understood my point about handedness.) Extroverts see what needs doing; introverts know what needs doing. And, most importantly, extroverts are stimulated; introverts are motivated.

This leads to characteristic liabilities. Introverts are likely to persist with something when everything around them suggests they should give up. Extroverts are likely to do some other thing (because it looms so large for them at the time) when they should persist with something which matters more to them in the long run.

Like me.

A big sorry to subscribers and regular readers of this blog. (I know there are a few of you.)

I have been so occupied with Web work—on several sites—that the blog has been neglected. This is a typical downside of being an extrovert: external tasks always loom larger than things one knows one should find time for.

Anyway, I’ve dealt with many of the small jobs; and one new website is now online: for a
holiday villa in Spring Hill, Florida. It was a labour of love, and I’m quite pleased with it. You are, of course, welcome to tell me what you think.
