What's a domain name?: Computers on the Internet find each other and communicate with each other using Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. These are sets of four numbers, like 66.98.208.65, or 8 hexadecimal numbers, like 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334.; Computers find these number useful; human beings would find them a nightmare. So we use 2-part names instead (like ‘webcostablanca.com’) and get the computers to translate them into the numbers they prefer to work with.; Clearly, it is vital that these names are unique—which is why they have to be registered.

How do I make up a name?: For the first part, you can use just about any combination of letters that you like, meaningful or not. You can also use hyphens, and even numbers—but be careful, since a potential visitor may type your domain name using letters for the number (“to” instead of “2”, for example).; The second part of the name you have to choose from a set list. It may contain information about the nature of a site (‘.com’ for a commercial site, for example, or ‘.org’' for a non-profit organisation) or about where the owners operate (‘.es’ for Spain, ‘.uk’ for the UK, and so on). It can be just one set of letters (like '.com'), or two (like '.co.uk' or '.uk.com').

What makes for a good domain name?: Part 1 (before the dot): should identify your organisation or company. May include what you do and/or where you operate. May be persuasive in itself, or unusual enough to grab attention (but be careful).; Part 2 (after the dot): look at websites similar to the one you want to have, if there are any. Their part 2 may well be the one you want. Otherwise, if you will be operating in a single country, and using the language of that country, it may help to use the top-level domain (TLD) for that country (e.g., .es or .uk). If your organisation is not run for profit, you may want to use .org. The catch-all, for every kind of website these days, is .com.
