There are two absolutely fundamental facts about successful websites.
- They get lots of visitors.
- They get visitors who are looking for what the website offers.
Visitors may come to a website because of personal recommendations. They may come because the website is listed in a local or specialist website directory, or advertised in a newspaper. But for most websites the critical fact is that visitors come because they found the website listed on a search engine results page when they entered a query in the engine’s search box.

There is no secret formula. But these tips work.
1. Give the visitors you want what they are looking for
Use the website searcher’s own words. Put yourself in her or his shoes. She or he types a few words into (say) Google’s search box. She/he is using those words to find the information she/he is looking for, the product or service she/he is after, or the organisation which is going to make the kind of difference which she/he hopes for.
Think about the visitors you really want to get to your website: what they will be looking for and the words they are likely to use. Analyse, analyse. Then provide, provide.
2. Work at it every day
Visitors—and search engines—like up-to-date websites. Add something to your website every day. Add new pages whenever you can. Do more research, so your information is always current. Refine your products. Keep an eye out for trends and fashions in your website’s area.
